It was the coconut tree set against the giant Naples yellow cloud & approaching storm which first stopped me in my tracks that evening in Exuma. The 2 dogs known as ‘Potcakes’ then caught my eye.
These stray dogs get their name from the food they eat - feeding on the remains of Bahamian peas & rice when it forms a cake at the bottom of the pot.

I have such fond memories of my trips to Bootle Bay during my time living on Grand Bahama.
I visited Tip on several occasions with my dear friend Hayden. She lived in the small settlement which was on an inland waterway that led to the sea, just outside West End.
Tip worked tirelessly for the Grand Bahama Humane Society, a charity that still cares for & re-homes stray dogs or
‘Pot Cakes’ as they are known in The Bahamas.
Prints of this painting are also available.
